Young Women and Hair Loss

Losing your hair can be a catastrophic experience and it could be particularly traumatizing for a women given the social stigma attached to it.  Hair  Loss can affect your psychological and emotional personality.  Women can suffer from hair loss in all age groups ranging from 10-70 years.  It becomes noticeable during your shower, while you are brushing it, when you are blow drying it and even post pregnancy.  The generalized statement that we shed between 100-150 hair per day is exactly that - a generalization.  Hair strands lost per day can vary from 5 - 250.  If the shedding becomes consistent and increased scalp visibility then it is a concern.  Women suffer hair loss due to quite a few different causes.

1. Female Pattern Loss or Androgenetic Alopecia

in which there is gradual thinning of hair over the vertex of the head. Over time this results in a widening of the middle hair parting. This is generally inherited and is equivalent of the common male pattern baldness seen in men.

2. Telogen Effluvium

A stress related alopecia that usually causes a heavy shedding phase that can last months.  This type of hair loss can be triggered from high stress, thyroid disorders, poor nutrition and a iron deficiency.

3. Auto-Immune Disease

There are three main alopecias that can cause traumatic loss. Alopecia Areata is a type of hair loss that causes spots or bald patches on the scalp. Alopecia Totalis causes you to lose all the hair on your head as well as eyebrow hair. Alopecia Universalis causes hair loss all over the hair and body. These type of alopecias are rare and unfortunately very hard to treat.

4. Hair Breakage

There are several other factors that can contribute to hair loss. Change in the weather, change in water, chemical hair treatments, using the wrong shampoos and conditioners, pulling your hair too tightly, curling irons and excessive heat on the scalp, crash diets, poor sleeping habits and birth control medications.

It's no surprise that a growing celebrity influence, increasing awareness to take care of one's appearance, societal pressure and higher awareness levels are all turning out to be drivers for the laser hair therapy market.  A large number of customers of laser therapy services are in the age group of 25-46.  Men used to dominate the demographics but in the past few years women have caught up.
